Anna’s Magic Ball® Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Anna Van Vloten')

Anna’s Magic Ball® is a charming, dwarf globe-shaped arborvitae developed by Proven Winners®. It’s prized for its bright golden foliage, compact size, and year-round interest. This cold-hardy evergreen is perfect for small spaces, borders, foundation plantings, and containers.

Key Features:

  1. Foliage: Features vibrant chartreuse to golden-yellow foliage that holds its color year-round, including in winter, when many evergreens turn dull. The soft, dense texture gives it a cheerful appearance.

  2. Growth Habit: Naturally forms a dense, rounded ball without pruning. Grows 12–15 inches tall and 15–18 inches wide, making it one of the smallest arborvitaes available.

  3. Evergreen: Maintains its foliage and color through all seasons, adding brightness even to winter landscapes.

  4. Cold Hardy: Very cold-tolerant and suitable for USDA zones 3–7, thriving even in harsh northern climates.

General Care Tips:

  1. Light: Prefers full sun to part shade. Best foliage color occurs with at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

  2. Soil: Grows best in moist, well-drained soil. Tolerant of a range of soil types, including clay, as long as drainage is adequate.

  3. Watering: Water regularly during establishment (first season), then water as needed in dry periods. Avoid overly wet or soggy conditions.

  4. Pruning: Rarely needs pruning due to its natural compact form. Light shaping can be done in spring if desired.

  5. Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can reduce its dense shape.

  6. Pests and Diseases: Generally pest-resistant and not prone to disease. Good air circulation and proper spacing help prevent fungal issues.

Landscape Uses:

  • Small gardens and landscapes

  • Rock gardens or alpine gardens

  • Low borders and edging

  • Containers or patio planters

  • Foundation plantings

  • Winter interest in mixed beds

Anna’s Magic Ball® Arborvitae is a low-maintenance, year-round beauty that adds a pop of golden color to any space. Its tiny size and tidy habit make it an ideal choice for gardeners looking to brighten up tight spots or design with structure on a small scale.
