St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a popular pollinator friendly, low maintenance  perennial with a beautiful display of yellow flowers. Here’s why St. John’s Wort is the perfect addition to your garden:

Appearance: St. John’s Wort has simple, oblong leaves that are densely packed along the stems, giving the plant a mounding shape. It has an upright habit but does not get very tall. Bright yellow flowers are displayed during the spring and summer, and pollinators are attracted to these blooms.

Size: It can be expected to reach 1-3 feet in height and 1-2 feet in width. While St. John’s Wort stays small, it is self-fertile and easily spreads.

Soil and Watering: St. John’s Wort can tolerate clay, loam, and sandy soils. While it is adaptable to these various soil types it prefers moist, well-drained soil. Weekly watering is recommended. St. John’s Wort may exhibit some drought tolerance during cooler periods.

Sunlight Requirements: Grow St. John’s Wort in full sun to part sun. Blooms will be more prolific with greater sun exposure.

Landscape Use: St. John’s Wort works well in borders, mass plantings, and part-shade garden beds. It is a great choice for pollinator or children’s gardens.

Overall, St. John’s Wort is a great option for a low-maintenance plant that adds ornamental and ecological value to any garden space. Its adaptability to its environment and versatility of use make this tree a great addition to the landscape.
