A patio is the piece of a landscape people actually use. It is where the grill goes, where the chairs end up on an October evening, and where most of the time outdoors is spent. It is also the piece least forgiving of shortcuts, because everything that goes wrong with a patio goes wrong underneath it, where you cannot see it until the surface starts to move.
We have been installing patios out of Valdese since 1973, and the ones we build in this part of the state have to handle conditions that a patio in flatter, sandier country never will: heavy clay that holds water, ground that rarely sits flat for long, and a freeze-thaw cycle that will lift any surface set on a base that was not built for it.
Pavers or flagstone?
Pavers give you a crisp, uniform surface and a huge range of colours, shapes and border options. They suit contemporary homes, pool surrounds and anywhere you want clean geometry or a defined edge. We used mortared Unilock paver borders on a Hickory backyard to frame pool decking and tie the whole space together.
Flagstone reads softer and more natural, with irregular pieces and colour variation that settle into a wooded or sloping lot the way cut stone does not. A circular flagstone patio we installed in Morganton was built around a raised stacked-stone firepit, and the irregular edge is what makes it feel like it belongs there rather than having been dropped in.
Neither is simply better. It comes down to the architecture of the house, how the space will be used, and how much visual texture you want underfoot. We will walk the site with you and talk through both.
What actually makes a patio last
Almost every failed patio in this region failed underneath. Western NC clay holds water, and water that cannot drain freezes, expands and lifts whatever is sitting on top of it. A patio set on too thin a base, or on a base that traps water, will be uneven within a few seasons no matter how good the stone is.
So the excavation, the depth and compaction of the base, and the way water is directed away from the surface and away from your foundation matter more than any material choice you make. That work is invisible in photographs and it is the entire reason a patio is still flat a decade later.
Multi-level patios and slopes
Very few yards around Hickory, Morganton or Lenoir are genuinely flat, and a slope is usually an opportunity rather than a problem. Stepping a patio across two levels creates natural zones — dining above, fire and seating below — and turns the grade change into the most interesting part of the design.
A Valdese project we completed did exactly this: a two-tiered paver patio tied into a structural retaining wall with integrated garden beds, a stone fire pit, and built-in lighting run through the steps and walls so the space works after dark. When a patio needs a wall to hold the grade, we build both, so the two are engineered together instead of one being retrofitted around the other.
Fire features, lighting and finishing
A fire pit extends a patio well into the autumn and is one of the most-used things we install. We build them in stacked stone and as raised, integrated features designed as part of the patio rather than added on afterwards.
Low-voltage lighting built into steps, wall caps and planting beds does the same for evenings. It is far easier and cheaper to run during installation than to retrofit later, so it is worth deciding on up front even if you defer other elements.
Because we are a nursery first, the planting that frames the finished patio is designed at the same time, from stock we grow and sell ourselves — rather than being handed off to someone else once the stonework is done.

Patios: common questions
Do I need a design before you can start?
Not necessarily, but it helps. Our Sketch-N-Go service is free and same-day: bring photos of your property to the nursery and our designers will hand-draw a sketch with recommendations while you wait. For larger projects we also offer full 3D renderings so you can see the finished space before any work begins.
What is the best time of year to build a patio in Western NC?
Hardscape work can run through most of the year here. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable conditions and the busiest, so booking ahead matters. Winter installation is often very workable in our climate outside of hard freezes and saturated ground, and it puts your patio in place before the spring rush.
Can you build a patio on a sloped yard?
Yes, and most of the yards we work in around Burke and Caldwell Counties slope to some degree. Depending on the grade we will either step the patio across multiple levels or combine it with a retaining wall to create usable flat space. A slope usually makes for a more interesting design than a flat lot does.
Do you handle the planting around the patio too?
Yes. We are a nursery first and a landscaping company second, so the trees, shrubs and beds that frame a finished patio come from our own stock and are designed as part of the same project rather than added later by someone else.
