Most plants that fail in a landscape were either the wrong plant for the spot or were put in the ground badly. Both are avoidable, and both are easier to avoid when the people planting also grow and sell the stock and have been watching what survives in this region since 1973.
We plant what we sell. That means we are not guessing about how a shrub performs in Burke County clay or which privacy screen actually holds up through a Western NC winter — we see the same plants come back through the nursery season after season.
This region covers a real range of conditions. A lot in Valdese or Morganton is a different planting environment from one up toward Blowing Rock or Banner Elk, and a lake property has different exposure again. Elevation, slope, drainage, sun and deer pressure all change what will thrive.
Our staff work through those variables with customers every day at the nursery counter. One of the most common requests we handle is evergreen privacy screening, where the choice between species matters enormously depending on spacing, mature width and how much moisture the site holds.
Correct planting depth, a hole sized for the root ball, soil amended appropriately for the site, and proper watering-in are what determine whether a plant establishes. Planted too deep — the single most common mistake — a tree can decline slowly for years before it fails.
Where the native soil needs help, we condition it as part of the install rather than dropping good plants into ground that will not support them.
Bed lines do most of the work in how a planted landscape reads. For this Lake Hickory home, we installed parallel landscape beds to create a grand driveway entrance. Designed with sweeping serpentine curves, foundational plantings, River Jack, and accent boulders, the space provides a beautiful first impression as guests drive onto the property.
Blowing Rock, NC
Clients wanted a natural pathway connecting their upper patio deck to the bottom of their property, so we installed a sweeping flagstone staircase bordered by Honeycutt river rock and fresh landscape plantings that beautifully blend the elevation change into the natural hillside.
Hickory, NC
We installed New Flagstone pathways, mortared Unilock paver borders, and Cane Creek stone accents around the pool decking. To tie it all together, we carved out fresh landscape beds with premium mulch and finished with a complete site restoration!
It depends on how much width you have, how fast you need coverage and how wet the site is — a screen along a narrow property line needs a different plant from a windbreak on an open lot. This is worth a conversation at the nursery where we can look at photos of the space and talk through mature sizes before you commit.
Autumn and early spring are generally ideal here, giving roots time to establish before summer heat. That said, container-grown stock can be planted through much of the year with appropriate watering. Ask us about the specific plant you have in mind.
Yes. We offer professional installation for anything we sell, and we deliver and place trees, shrubs and bulk materials. Many customers have us install the large material and handle the smaller perennials themselves.
